In Wellston, many of our residents love spending their spare time outdoors. In addition to wonderful opportunities for fishing, camping, hiking, and other outdoor recreation right here in the Manistee National Forest, there are abundant opportunities for these same activities throughout the state. Here are 5 of our favorite places to go camping in Michigan.
Campground Warblers Cove
This campground is located in the northern part of the Lower Michigan Peninsula right on the edge of the expansive Huron National Forest. With 640 acres of wooded land to enjoy, there are also four different lakes for fishing or water sports, and all manner of biking and walking trails to try out. The campground offers a wide array of amenities including water and electrical hookups for recreational vehicles, free WiFi, plus bikes, paddleboats, and row boats. This popular campground is definitely a camper’s summer paradise.
Loomis Landing Campground and Marina
Of course we’d be remiss if we didn’t include at least one Wellston campground on our list. The Loomis Landing Campground is located right on the edge of the Tippy Dam, deep in the heart of the Manistee National Forest. This prime location offers visitors opportunities for bird-watching, hiking, biking, boating, swimming, photography, and hunting. Most notably, the Pine & Manistee Rivers are favorites among fishermen, with a large variety of fish including pike, walleye, trout, catfish, bass, salmon, steelhead and more. Camping at this property includes 11 primitive sites that are large enough to accommodate RVs, without water or electrical hookups. Here, you’ll get to enjoy raw and rugged nature at its finest.
Addison Oaks County Park
Addison Oaks boasts two lakes and more than 1000 acres for camping and outdoor exploration. There is a sandy beach along the lakeshore where children can play, as well as ample room for RVs, and more than 13 miles of hiking & cross country ski trails to try out. Consider trying your hand at the park’s year-round disc golf course or rent a kayak and skim across the water. Enjoy your camping experience in comfort, with electricity and water on-site. For those that prefer, the property also offers cabins and yurts for a more glamorous camping experience.
Pere Marquette State Park
Nestled on a narrow peninsula between Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan, sits the Pere Marquette State Park. This nature lover’s paradise boasts myriad outdoor activities including horseback riding, hiking, birdwatching, hunting, fishing, boating, fall foliage viewing, and lounging waterside at the pristine white sand beaches of Lake Michigan. Stay close to nature at one of the park’s camp sites or cabins, or rest your head at the rustic, yet beautiful Pere Marquette Lodge, which was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression.
Sleeper State Park
Sleeper State Park is located in southern Michigan along Saginaw Bay and boasts 723 acres of forest land, gorgeous sandy beaches, and wetlands. It is an excellent location for canoeing on Lake Huron, taking in a sunrise or sunset, catching some rays, fishing the waters of Lake Huron, hiking ancient sand dunes, and paddling a kayak. Reserve a campsite or park your RV here for a few nights to fully discover all this gem of a park has to offer.
